Anthony Campbell's Book Reviews
Personal Choice
There are two motives for reading a book: one, that you enjoy it, the
other that you can boast about it. [Bertrand Russell]
I've given stars to some of the books reviewed here but this is usually
an off-the-cuff judgement, made just after I've read them. It doesn't
necessarily reflect how important I think the book is in the long run.
So what I've done now is to list just a few of the books I've read over
the years which have stayed in my mind for one reason or another and
which I continue to refer to or even reread from time to time. If I had
to go to my desert island, these are some of the books I'd like to have
with me.
I hesitated for a long time before making a selection of this kind.
These are by no means the only books I've enjoyed or found to be
important and the list could easily have been longer, particularly the
fiction. So I'm sure about the value of the books I've included but
there could certainly have been more of them. The selection probably
says as much about me as it does about the books, but, anyway, here it
is. They are grouped vaguely by category but there is some overlapping.
For a different kind of selection, see my selected reading lists.
