LINUX

I'm not a programmer or a computer expert but I do enjoy messing about with computers. I've been using Linux as my operating system for more than 8 years now.

The Linux distribution I prefer is Debian. If I were not on Debian I'd probably use Slackware or even Gentoo, but compiling everything oneself, though useful as a learning experience, is too time-consuming for me. The deb packaging system is better than rpm and -- an important consideration for me -- I like the Debian non-commercial ethos. For more on this, see Why Linux? Why Debian?

I've now installed Linux on three different laptops (Toshiba Satellite, Thinkpad R40e, and Thinkpad Z61M). The first two were easy (though the Toshiba is now defunct), but with the Thinkpad Z61M I initially had problems with sound and wireless when using the Debian installation disk.

These were solved by using Ubuntu, which is largely Debian-based so not too much of a culture shock. However, I still hankered after native Debian, and after some research I ended up installing Sidux, which provides Debian Sid.
